Shift happens

Monday, March 30th, 2009

That’s right, shift happens.  And that’s been true since the beginning of time.  However, it hasn’t happened at the same pace as it is today.  Consider:

n China has more honor kids than the U.S. has kids.

n China will soon become the No. 1 English-speaking country in the world.

n It is estimated that today’s learner will have 10 to 14 jobs… by the age of 38.

n The top 10 in-demand jobs next year did not exist five years ago.

n 1 out of 8 couples married last year, met online.

n Nintendo is known to spend more than twice as much on research and   development than the government spends on research and innovation in education.

n The number of text messages sent and received every day exceeds the total population of the planet.

n By next year, it is expected that the amount of NEW technical information will double every 72 hours.

We are living in exponential times.  That makes it tough for any CEO to be successful without a high powered team on board. There’s no way to keep up, stay current and take advantage of the possibilities.

And that’s not a scary thing.  For if CEO’s turn to their teams and employees in order to keep up with the ever shifting environment, they’ll energize their staffs merely by engaging them and allowing them to make a difference.

Of course if they do take the challenge, and try to ride the tsunami of change alone, they’ll die. Enough said.  Shift happens.

Century old success philosophy still works

I’m in the business of helping individuals and businesses succeed.  That can be as complicated or simple as you want to make it. And these days, there seems to be a determination to make it more complicated and difficult.

Yes, I know about the recession and the unpleasant losses of the stock market… the 401Ks that are now referred to as 201Ks or less.  Nonetheless, you have to ask yourself why some people see opportunity in these times, while others can only conjure up crises. How can that be?

Before you start down the path of analyzing various industries and detailing the many obstacles to overcome, let me give you a hint: The answer is one word, just one word.

I know many won’t believe it, but then they’re among the crises creators. It really is simple, and it really is powerful. The one word… attitude.

Before the skeptics Google on, let me share some proof… an attitude success story.  Consider someone among the masses of his industry, getting the results expected in a down economy.

The industry…financial planning,  not an occupation of choice these days.  Some financial planners have quit, some are just down in the dumps, others are trying to rise above the tide but don’t truly believe it’s possible.

So let me tell you about one of my clients.  He’s got a pretty successful track record for the few years he’s been in the business.  He and some of his colleagues were meeting to brainstorm some ideas about how to overcome the downturn in business.  And it was during this meeting that he made a proclamation that had the others wondering.

He proclaimed that he would have the best month of his career in March.  That sparked questions… how are you going to do that?  His response, I don’t know, I’m just going to do it.  And do it he did!  Two weeks into the month he was there.

How did he do it?  You know… that one word.  He changed his attitude in a very big way.

That old saying about the glass being half full or half empty reminds us that both statements are factual, both are true.  And so it is in today’s business climate, there truly exists opportunity and crises. It’s all in the perspective.

So what’s your perspective?  Perhaps an attitude adjustment could make all the difference. It has been known to work for centuries.
